The origins of Ansouis

The hilltop village of Ansouis has been ranked among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France" since June 1982.

Founded in the 10th century, Ansouis has preserved traces of its rich past over the centuries, as shown by the ramparts that still encircle the village today. Perched on a rocky spur, Ansouis offers breathtaking views over the Provençal countryside and surrounding mountains.

Several parts of the village bear witness to Gallo-Roman settlement: a medieval castrum most likely succeeded an oppidum, though this has never been confirmed. A record of a fortified structure dates back to 1261. Indeed, in the Middle Ages, Ansouis was an important fortified village. The Château d'Ansouis, built in the 10th century, served as a strategic defensive point and witnessed numerous historic events. Over the centuries, the château was altered and extended, evolving from a medieval fortress into a seigneurial residence. As the centuries passed, Ansouis saw a succession of lords and owners, each leaving their mark on the village's architecture and culture. The Sabran family, one of the most influential families in the region, owned the château for a long time. Their coat of arms can still be seen in parts of the château and the church.

The village itself grew up around the château, with narrow lanes and traditional stone houses. Saint-Martin church, dating from the 12th century, is another important reminder of Ansouis's medieval history. It is known for its frescoes and remarkable architecture, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Ansouis is therefore not only a beautiful Provençal village, but also a place where history unfolds at every corner, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse of Provence's medieval and Renaissance past.

The must-sees of the village of Ansouis in the Luberon

Besides the château and Saint-Martin church, Ansouis boasts considerable cultural heritage, reflected in its beautifully preserved house façades and typical lanes that have changed little in centuries. The village is full of heritage sites well worth a visit.

The village is best explored on foot, among lanes, calades and typically Provençal façades. Its rich heritage also gives pride of place to culture, with museums covering unexpected themes, and even a furnished, lived-in château! Ideally situated on a rocky knoll close to Lourmarin, Villelaure and Cucuron, you can wander among art galleries and discover ceramics, santons and photography. There is something for every taste in Ansouis.

You can discover the Ansouis balcony and admire an exceptional panorama over the Luberon, stretching from Lourmarin and its combe to Cucuron, along with a view of the Durance towards Villelaure. There is also the Maison des Consuls, where the city council met in the 15th and 16th centuries. Located at the junction of Rue Grande and Rue du Château, it occupies a large plot. Do not miss the Ansouis belfry either. From 1540, the Ansouis community council met in the house of the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit. After this brotherhood was dissolved, the house became the town hall. A belfry, topped with a wrought-iron campanile, was built above it to house the clock, probably in the late 16th or early 17th century.

The Luberon is renowned for its gentle pace of life and natural beauty, which is why Ansouis is the ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding area, with numerous hiking trails and cycling routes on offer.

What is more, the Musée Extraordinaire de la famille Mazoyer will surprise you with its warm welcome, its imposing sculptures outside the entrance, and an interior combining art (paintings, ceramics, stained glass) with education (collections of fossils, shells and furniture). You will also find the Musée des Arts et Métiers du Vin "Château Turcan", displaying more than 3,000 tools and pieces of equipment, some of them rare, related to winemaking and coopering, along with one of the oldest wine presses (18th century), oenology items (a laboratory dating from 1900) and traditional winemaking artefacts.
