The Origins of the Revestel District in Cassis

Just 800 metres from Cassis harbour, the Revestel district owes its rural character to the AOC vineyards it has sheltered since the Middle Ages. Vineyards still in operation sit alongside former estates, in a green landscape bordered by the Mediterranean.

Cassis vineyards were first cultivated along the coast before spreading inland. Those of Revestel are thought to date from the 14th or 15th century. Regarded in the 19th century as the finest in Provence, Cassis wine retained its renown and extended it worldwide, despite the phylloxera blight that struck its vineyards at the dawn of the 20th century. Dominated by Cap Canaille, Revestel and its terraced vineyards today represent one of the most quintessential landscapes of Cassis.

The district stretches from west to east, just a few hundred metres from Cassis harbour to the Route des Crêtes, which leads towards La Ciotat.
