The Origins of the Pointe-Rouge District

The "Pointe Rouge" district, part of Marseille's 8th arrondissement, takes its name from the red-tinted earth of the small cliffs between Pointe Rouge and Madrague de Montredon. In the 18th century, the Pointe Rouge district was frequented only by a handful of fishermen who set up their cabins there; from the late 18th century onwards, it became increasingly populated, largely due to the arrival of industry in southern Marseille.

Between 1905 and 1930, a first harbour was built at Pointe Rouge, including a jetty, which today forms the site's current water sports centre. Later, between 1964 and 1972, as recreational boating grew in popularity in Marseille, larger-scale works were carried out with the creation of the Port de la Pointe Rouge. Indeed, this location offered the ideal conditions for establishing Marseille's major new marina. Then, in 1968, the masterplan considered doubling the harbour's capacity by building a second basin, though this was ultimately never built.

Must-See Highlights of the Pointe-Rouge District

Pointe-Rouge beach is a sandy beach much loved by local residents and well sheltered from prevailing winds. Other swimming spots can also be found in the district, such as the highly popular Batterie and Bain des Dames beaches towards Montredon.

There are numerous restaurants, such as Bistrot La Parenthèse and P.Kitchen, as well as beachside tapas bars like Le Cabanon de Paulette, which offers stunning views over L'Abri Côtier beach. There are also many trendy bars, such as Le Bar des Amis and the RedLion. Indeed, this district is lively and full of energy. The National Merchant Navy School, known as "L'Hydro", is also based here, with the Marseilleveyre secondary school nearby.
