Cap Canaille in Cassis
Want to know more about Cap Canaille in Cassis? Discover its history, must-sees, and everyday quality of life.

The Origins of Cap Canaille
The Canaille massif, also known as the Soubeyran cliff, forms France's highest maritime cliff, stretching 2 km long. Its highest point, La Grande Tête, rises to 394 metres, where the colourful, predominantly ochre-red rock, alternating layers of limestone, sandstone and conglomerate, reflects in the sea.
Cap Canaille lies within the town of Cassis, to the north-west of La Ciotat. The name "Canaille" comes from the Latin "canalis mons", meaning mountain of waters or aqueducts, or from the Provençal "Cap naïo", meaning a mountain that swims, advancing into the sea.
A 15 km road, the "Route des Crêtes", winds along the length of the massif linking Cassis to La Ciotat, offering spectacular views over the Gulf of Cassis, the calanques, the Riou archipelago in the Marseille roadstead to the west, and as far as the Var to the east. This geological gem is home to exceptional biodiversity.
